• Total quality environmental management: Adoption status in the Chinese manufacturing sector

      Purpose - To address the critical sustainability challenges currently faced by China, manufacturers in this country have committed to improve their environmental performance. To support this commitment, evidence suggests that Chinese manufacturers have mainly turned to the implementation of environmental management approaches such as ISO 14001, cleaner production, green supply chain management, circular economy and green lean. However, the adoption of other approaches such as Total Quality Environmental Management by Chinese manufacturers is less clear. This paper fills this gap by providing light into fundamental issues regarding the implementation of TQEM in the manufacturing sector of China. Methodology/design/approach - A survey-based exploratory study was conducted based on 119 Chinese manufacturing companies and the data obtained was analysed using a combination of descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings – The results revealed that in general, there is less awareness of TQEM in the Chinese manufacturing sector than other environmental and quality/operations improvement approaches such as green supply chain management, reverse logistics, ISO 9000, Six Sigma and lean six sigma. Thus, its degree of implementation is also lower than these approaches as well as ISO 14001. The results also indicate that although a company’s size is not associated to the implementation of TQEM, it is mainly large organisations and those that have adopted TQM those which will be mainly aware and have implemented TQEM. The study also reveal the drivers, results and challenges of TQEM implementation. Originality/value - The paper extends the currently limited knowledge on TQEM, and its results are beneficial for managers who aim at effectively adopting TQEM to simultaneously improve the environmental, operational and financial performance of their organisations. The paper can also motivate organisations not currently embarked on the “green wagon” to contemplate the benefits that implementing TQEM, or any other environmental management approach, may bring to their operations and business.
    • Towards a conceptual framework for Value Stream Mapping (VSM) implementation: An in-vestigation of managerial factors

      Despite the relatively extensive literature on VSM, limited reflection has been reported regarding how managerial proceedings actually put VSM into practice. This research therefore investigates these issues as part of the overall lean philosophy and in correlation with some of its main tools. Five hypotheses and three complementary research questions were formulated and tested using a combination of descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation, 2-Sample proportion, One-way ANOVA, 1-Sample t-tests and Tukey-Pairwise comparison tests. Data were collected through a survey questionnaire responded by 168 manufacturing organisations worldwide. The results establish, among other ‘soft’ aspects; (1) whether organisations that have adopted lean have also employed VSM as an essential tool to identify waste, (2) the position that VSM normally takes in the timeframe hierarchy of lean implementation, (3) the complexity of VSM implementation in terms of easiness and time taken for training when compared to other lean tools such as TPM, JIT and Jidoka, and the (4) critical success factors and barriers for the VSM implementation. A conceptual framework to support the implementation and management of VSM is developed through the unification of the results obtained. This study supports the very limited empirical research on the implementation and management of VSM.
    • Towards a conceptual roadmap for statistical process control implementation in the food industry.

      Statistical process control (SPC) is one of the most highly used quality control techniques in the industry. The lack of specific implementation guidelines makes it the least applied quality control technique in the food industry. This paper presents a five-phase SPC implementation conceptual roadmap in the food industry developed based on a critical review on current literature of various SPC deployment methods. It considers six critical factors for the SPC implementation in the food industry. This paper makes unique contributions by presenting a systematic approach for the managers of this industry to successfully deploy SPC in their organisations.
    • Towards a life cycle sustainability analysis: A systematic review of approaches to sustainable manufacturing.

      In 2011, the international organisations launched the Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment Framework for experts from different disciplinary fields to discuss and develop a holistic and integrated approach that supports effective sustainable development and sustainability decision-making. In response, various authors have used combinations of sustainable manufacturing methodologies and approaches to support this goal. This paper used a structured approach to a literature review to systematically examine sustainable manufacturing approaches between 2006 and 2015, and the move from segmented assessment methods to the holistic and integrated Life Cycle Sustainability Analysis. The analysis of the identified 54 relevant contributions indicated 68.5% of the articles focused on sustainable product development techniques, whereas 31.5% on sustainability assessment techniques. From the second, 70.4% of these were segmented approaches while only 29.6% incorporated the three sustainability dimensions. Further, the analysis showed that the energy aspect was incorporated into all the approaches, and there is a dearth of holistic approaches to sustainable manufacturing. Additionally, the paper initiates a theoretical framework that will underpin the development of a holistic simulation-based analytical framework that integrates goals that support progressive sustainable product development with methods that focus on the holistic quantitative analysis of the three sustainability dimensions.
    • Towards a more circular economy: exploring the awareness, practices, and barriers from a focal firm perspective.

      The circular economy (CE) proposes an economic framework based on circular flows of products and materials. Transition towards a CE is underway, therefore, understanding the nature and state of this transition is important for creating effective policies and business strategies. Some studies have focused on specific contexts and pockets of good practice. This exploratory, survey-based study of 77 companies investigates the shift towards the CE using a taxonomy of practices and barriers. Results show that firms favour practices related to resource and energy utilisation efficiency, while practices related to investment recovery, green purchasing and customer cooperation are less prevalent. Eco-design and internal environmental management practices have a medium level of implementation. The significant upfront investment cost, lack of awareness or sense of urgency were identified as implementation barriers. Results suggest the CE is driven by economic not environmental considerations, and the deployment of practices remains within a firm rather than across the supply chain.
    • Towards sustainable industrial development - a systems thinking-based approach

      Various critical global issues, including global warming and poverty, have been recognized and identified by the United Nations (UN) as drivers for unsustainability. Consequently, the UN established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the aim of seeking universal peace and larger freedom by balancing the three dimensions of sustainable development, i.e. economic, social and environmental. A particular attention SDGs pay is in eradicating poverty as this is considered one of the greatest global challenges. Poverty is not only an economic matter as it also has an impact on the social and environmental dimensions. A strategy to tackle poverty is to foster industry development. However, a holistic point of view is necessary by also considering stakeholders otherwise, it becomes a neoliberal solution. Despite the fact that some research has been conducted, e.g. case studies and surveys of sustainable practices, there is a lack of industrial sustainable development as a framework to tackle sustainability issues. Thus, this paper proposes a framework for industrial sustainable development under a socially inclusive approach within the context of the Mexican manufacturing industry. The framework proposal is based on a state-of-the-art literature review conducted in the Web of Science and Scopus databases.
    • Transport operations optimisation through lean implementation – a case study

      Lean has benefited industries, however, the research regarding its implementation in the transportation sector is limited. Therefore, there is huge potential for the implementation of Lean in the transportation sector. With the growing population and production, traffic congestion is no surprise, placing constraints on transport operations. This research utilises two extensions of the Lean tools of Transportation Value Stream Mapping (TVSM) and Transportation Overall Vehicle Effectiveness (TOVE). This research presents a case study of company XYZ based in Thailand, to optimise their transport operations through utilisation of Lean and its extensions mentioned earlier. As a result, the TOVE index is projected to improve from 17% to 31% and TVSM from 51% – 70%. The empirical study presented in this research paves the way for further research and adoption of Lean in transportation operations.
    • Understanding circular economy awareness and practices in manufacturing firms

      Circular Economy (CE) has evolved as a result of the growing environmental awareness, environmental legislation and the need for social responsibility. However, awareness levels of CE are not as high as expected and practices are further behind than they should be, with a significant lack of research around the subject in the literature. This study therefore attempts to examine the current state of awareness levels and the practices around CE in manufacturing firms. Moreover, the study aims to empirically validate one of the earlier proposed CE models. The study adopts a quantitative survey questionnaire based approach. More than 500 people from various manufacturing organisations were contacted directly over a 40-day long sampling process through the FAME database, personal contacts and LinkedIn. The survey resulted in 103 completed responses. Given the exploratory nature of the study, the data was mainly analysed using descriptive statistics. To validate the CE model, a correlation analysis was also conducted. The research findings show that with the growing emphasis on CE across the globe by governing bodies, firms are becoming more aware of CE practices. The analysis also shows some useful insights on the state of each of the pillars (economic benefits, environmental impact and resource scarcity) of CE. Our findings also indicate that the environmental impact pillar of CE is at a more developed state than the other two pillars which are –mostly- in a research state. Research Implications and Limitations: The study provides manufacturing firms with a thorough understanding of the state of CE practices and importance of its successful implementation. The findings of the study advocates consideration of all three pillars of CE by managers as a guide to plan for an efficient strategy around CE implementation. Moreover, our study adds to existing efforts by the academic community to raise the awareness towards CE practice among all relevant stakeholders. The findings of this study are based on the responses from a limited 103 survey responses from manufacturing firms. Originality/value: This study adds to the very limited empirical literature on CE awareness and practices in manufacturing firms. This is also one of the first studies attempting to empirically validate an existing CE model.
    • Use of clean technologies in agribusiness in Mexico: A literature review

      There is little research documenting the use of clean technologies (CT) in Agribusiness in Mexico. In this regard, the objective of this article is to provide an in-depth literature review that can cover this gap and help decision-makers and investors to identify opportunity areas in the industry. It also provides a good theoretical background for researchers and practitioners to further investigate applications of clean technologies in this sector or other potential ones. To conduct this research, an in-depth analysis of the literature on clean technologies and their use by agribusiness in Mexico was carried out. The databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and Springer were used to identify the relevant international journals in the field and their research-contributions. The main results show that there is a need for financial investments on clean technologies CT that can help optimizing processes and products on the sector. The results also showed that CT is mainly used to minimize energy consumption, to optimize planting and harvesting, to enhance irrigation and water use, and to maintain the soil fertility. Despite these wide applications, the authors found that the penetration of CT is still low and policy-strategies are required with effective financial investments in the sector.
    • Using BPM to improve sustainability in biomass generation

      Biomass represents approximately 10% of the energy sources in the world. The most common use of biomass for energy is direct combustion, gasification, carbonization and pyrolysis. In this perspective, torrefaction emerges as a thermal biomass pre-treatment method that has an ability to reduce the major limitations of biomass, such as heterogeneity and lower energy density. However, one of the outputs from the torrefaction process is a pyrolysis condensate (tar). Tar is brown or black liquid composed of hydrocarbons which can cause clogging and fouling of pipes, heat exchangers or particulate filters. This paper provides a study performed in a biomass power generation company that was producing an excess of tar. In order to provide a solution to the excess tar generated, a framework to implement sustainability business processes using the Business Process Management (BPM) approach was used. The study found two solutions for the issue (short- term and long-term scenarios) using tools to improve the process management by focusing on sustainability.
    • Using entropy and AHP-TOPSIS for comprehensive evaluation of internet shopping malls and solution optimality

      Consumers are switching from offline to online to buy everything due to this reason nowadays Internet shopping malls (ISMs) are setting up a very crucial role in the economy. For assessment and ranking are basically a critical work which could be exploitation of Internet shopping malls information resources when consider in a scientific way, there are many methods for the evaluation and ranking of e-commerce sites. Taking into consideration Traffic Rank, Inbound Links, Competition, Speed, and Keyword Statistics, in literature Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods are rarely used by the researchers to find the rank of Internet Shopping Malls (ISMs) on the basis of primary/secondary data of these influencing factors. This study, therefore, is unique to narrow down the gap in literature by employing MCDM methods i.e. Entropy and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to collect the weight of influencing factors and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal (TOPSIS) to find the rank of Internet Shopping Malls (ISMs). After finding out the rank of selected criteria, solution optimality needs to be done to find the average ideal solution matrix. Conclusion and managerial implications of the study are also discussed.
    • Using Fuzzy Delphi and Generalized Fuzzy TOPSIS to Evaluate Technological Service Flexibility Dimensions of Internet Malls

      The expanding development of technology and availability of the internet is leading a consumer shift from offline to online activity. This shifting behavior shows positive signs for the growth of the e-commerce market but also increases the challenges for the online service provider to provide satisfaction and loyalty to consumers when there is no personal interaction between buyer and seller. In these circumstances, quality, in terms of technology services i.e. web/transaction, can play a significant role for the service provider, especially for internet shopping malls. But there is little material available in current literature to build a theoretical model for web/transaction flexibility dimensions and to rank internet shopping malls on their provision of services to customers. The vagueness of the available information can be tackled by fuzzy theory by employing a Fuzzy Delphi method to finalize technological service dimensions and lead to development of a research model. The final ranking of internet malls has been achieved by utilizing Generalized Fuzzy TOPSIS. The findings of this study can be useful for internet shopping malls in devising strategies to provide a better quality of web/transaction service to customers.
    • Using the Delphi method to verify a framework to implement sustainability initiatives.

      The paper provides a Delphi study to verify the framework to implement sustainability initiatives in the business processes. The Delphi technique seeks to obtain consensus on the opinions of experts, termed panel members, through a series of questionnaires. As part of the process, the responses from each round are fed back in summarized form to the participants who are then given an opportunity to respond again to the emerging data. The study successfully obtained a consensus in the phases and steps of the conceptual framework and provided feedback from the specialists. According to them, leadership, people and cost were identified as the main challenges related to the sustainability adoption by the organisations and key performance indicators (KPIs), Lifecycle assessment (LCA) and triple bottom line (TBL) were identified as the main methods to assess al the sustainability dimensions in terms of business processes.
    • When risks need attention: adoption of green supply chain initiatives in the pharmaceutical industry

      The pharmaceutical industry is very important in delivering life-saving products/services to society. There are many ways for materials/products/services concerned with pharmaceuticals to influence the environment; these include improper disposal of pills/tablets by patients, expired and unused medications, improper release of drugs by pharmacies or household sewage mixed with surplus drugs. In view of this, the present work seeks to integrate green supply chain (GSC) concepts in the pharmaceutical sector in a developing economy Indian context. In so doing, managers need to determine the potential risks in adopting GSC initiatives to achieve sustainability in operational perspectives. In this sense, this work seeks to distinguish the potential risks in adopting GSC initiatives within the pharmaceutical industry. This work uses a literature review and fuzzy Delphi approach in finalising the risks. This research also uses fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) for prioritisation of the risks under vague and unclear surroundings. According to the findings, cold chain technology and supply risks categories are highly prioritised. This work can assist practising managers and government authorities in effectively developing and managing GSC initiatives in line with sustainable development goals in the context of the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, a sensitivity test is applied to evaluate the stability of ranking of risks.
